The course aims to trace a history of the evolution of Venetian glass, also starting with some technical hints necessary for understanding the evolution of styles over the centuries, from antiquity to the present day.
I expect that a student, after the 30 hours of lessons together, will be able to recognise a glass object made in Murano and be able to describe its technique and above all understand which century it belongs to .
An average - good knowledge of English and a certain curiosity about design and craftsmanship topics
The course will give some technical information, related to glassmaking, which is important for the student to understand the production process, mostly manual. In a second stage, the glass object will be analysed in the historical-artistic context that produced it: biographies of the major glass masters, styles, taste, exhibitions, the market...
The basic text - summarised and edited in English - required for this course is:
Attilia Dorigato. Murano. Island of Glass, Venice, 2013

An extensive in-depth bibliography will also be provided to students on a case-by-case basis according to specific interests
At the end of each lecture students are invited for a short discussion with the lecturer, this is also useful to keep attention and interest alive

The examination takes place on a single day and is written: a test in which students have to describe three images already discussed in class during the 30 hours and also published in Attilia Dorigato's textbook
Eighty per cent of the course is conducted in the classroom, with two hours of lectures and powerpoints. Two outings are then planned: one to the Murano Glass Museum where students are invited to present some pieces from the collection if they feel ready, and to the Stanze del Vetro (Cini Foundation) for the Venini exhibition. Light
The students will also be shown glass objects made in Murano (Murrine, small beads and glasses) from the teacher's collection
