The Chinese language module 1.1 is an integral part of the Master’s Degree Programme in Languages, Economics and Institutions of Asia and North Africa (Chinese). It aims to strengthen students’ abilities to translate into Italian from Chinese, and vice versa, as well as to develop methodological tools for linguistic analysis and interlinguistic comparison. Students will thus be able to make their linguistic competence a key tool for understanding and interpreting the main social and cultural transformations that have occurred in modern and contemporary China. Conversation courses aim to guide students in acquiring the ability to discuss issues related to Chinese society and culture in the context of the ongoing globalisation processes.
1. Knowledge and understanding
- Becoming familiar with the basic linguistic terminology of the translation
- Acquire skills for the analysis of language and its rhetorical devices, as well as the understanding of its meanings and significance in specific social and cultural contexts.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- Knowing how to perform linguistic analysis on different aspects of the mother tongue and the Chinese language

3. Ability to judge
- Knowing how to formulate and argue hypotheses, while developing a critical approach to the evaluation of alternative hypotheses as well.

4. Communication skills
- Acquire the ability to discuss issues concerning cultures and societies using appropriate terminology.
- To know how to interact with peers and with the tutor, in a respectful way.

5. Learning skills
- Knowing how to take notes and collaboratively share them.

CEFR Level: B2
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.
Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
To have a good knowledge of the Italian language and a Chinese language proficiency corresponding to the level B1+ of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Language Proficiency).
he course develops the ability to understand, analyse and translate Chinese articles concerned with contemporary Chinese society and culture. In particular, it is structured as follows:
- 30 hours of reading comprehension and translation of Chinese texts, with the goal to improve students' language skills through morpho-synctactic segmentation, lexical analysis, and the translation of the texts under examination, which cover topics pertaining to the socio-political reality of today's China, such as speeches, articles, official documents, in shumian 书面 register;
- 60 hours of training in conversation (A);
- 60 hours of training in Italian- Chinese translation (B);
- conversation tutoring: practice C;
- translation tutoring: practice D.
The texts to be translated and further bibliographic information will be supplied during the course.

The verification of acquired abilities and skills is carried out through three tests:
- Conversation in Chinese;
- Chinese-Italian translation;
- Italian-Chinese translation.
Teaching is organized in:
a) front lessons;
b) writing and conversation practice aimed at building and consolidating the knowledge, skills and competences necessary to meet the goal of the course;
c) tutoring aimed at discussing and clarifying specific language problems that emerged during the teaching.
