This course is included in the "attività caratterizzanti" (characterizing activites) of the master course in Lavoro, Cittadinanza Sociale, Interculturalità (Labour, Social Citizenship and Interculture) and it is related to the following objectives of the master:
- reaching ad advanced knwoledge of features and dynamics of contemporary societies with particular reference to contemporary welfare states
- an advanced knowledge of new social risks and of the policies implemented for addressing them.
Knowledge and understanding
In the second module of the course, the expected knowledge concerns:

-The concept and applications of direct social action
- Characteristics and recent evolution of the following policies: health policies, mental health policies, reproductive health policies.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
After attending the course the student will know:
- recognize and critically analyze the approaches of direct social action;
- critically analyze a specific policy to contrast one of the new social risks as described in the "contents" section.

To achieve these objectives, the course includes several moments of discussion between the students on previously prepared materials: the teacher assigns readings that the students will present to the class with the task of arousing a debate.

Making judgments:
During the course, students are invited to compare the various approaches and methodologies presented, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

Learning ability
Knowing how to critically consult the reference texts (and related bibliographies) and the teaching materials present on Moodle to make connections between different approaches and contexts.
Students should have a basic knowledge of the functioning of the welfare state and of the main social policies.
In this second module of the course the concepts of Social Innovation, Direct Social Action and Co-production will be introduced. Concrete applications will be presented for each concept.
This second module also explores, also with a diachronic perspective, other social policies aimed at combating new social risks. In particular, the following will be addressed in class: Mental health policies, Health policies, reproductive health policies, Eco-welfare policies. In addition to the specific contents of the policies, particular attention will be paid to how scholars have approached the study of the various topics at a methodological level.

Students are asked to "adopt" a specific policy (or social risk) and build their final paper on it.
Mandatory readings on which the oral exam will focus. Other materials will be indicated for carrying out the paper.

The exam is written (50% of the assessment) and oral (50% of the assessment). The written part consists in the development of a paper of about ten folders to be done at home and uploaded to the Moodle platform. The paper must be carried out in groups of minimum 2 and maximum 4 people. The oral part consists of an interview on the reference texts. It is possible to carry out the oral interview in two parts: one at the end of the first module on the texts relating to that module and one at the end of the second module with the material foreseen for the second part of the course.
Detailed information on the paper will be provided in class and on moodle.
This second part of the course has a distinctly seminar format. Professor provides some stimuli and frames the issues. Students are encouraged to read materials that will be assigned and be ready to discuss them in class. Furthermore, the working groups that will be formed for the drafting of the paper will have to periodically update the class on the state of their work and thus receive feedback from the other groups and from the teacher.
