The course, which is part of the study path in Labor, Social Citizenship, Interculturality, aims to provide knowledge of the legislation on social security and welfare, with particular regard to the institutions that the State regulates in favour of workers and citizens in need.
Specifically, the teaching aims to deepen the characteristics of the national welfare system and its main legal institutions, which are instrumental in orienting oneself within the field of social services.
The active participation in the activities offered on the course and individual study will allow students to:
- acquire the knowledge of fundamental institutions and notions of social security law;
- apply this knowledge to face and resolve, with independent ability to evaluate, specific problems, posed in their professional career;
- orient his/her self in today's social security system, developing at the same time adequate learning skills that will allow them to update independently and to deepen their knowledge of the discipline in relation to the work context in which they will operate.

No pre-requirement requested, but knowledge, at least elementary, of labor law is recommended.
Welfare state. Origins and evolution of social security. Welfare systems.
The legal system of social security. The contributory relationship. The social security legal relationship. Protection for accidents at work and occupational diseases. Protection for disability, old age and survivors. Health protection. Protection for unemployment. Protection of the family and parenthood. The social assistance system and welfare benefits. Income guarantees for workers: general notions. The national health service. Labour market and active Labour market policies.
The handbook will be indicated at the beginning of the course.
The verification of learning consists of an oral exam on the main topics covered in class and on case studies discussed with students during class. Students will be able to carry out in-depth individual or group work on topics that will be agreed upon during the lessons, which will be taken into account in the overall assessment.
The course will be divided into lectures and practical exercises, also in groups.
