LATIN PALAEOGRAPHY

Teaching falls within the teachings of the common path of the three-year history degree.
The teaching aims to provide students with the methodological tools of the history of writing from the 2nd century B.C. to the 16th century, with the introduction of large-scale printing.
The aims of the teaching are: to develop reflection skills on written forms, on the state of conservation of writing materials, on the forms of transmission of texts; to provide the main tools for transcriptions and critical editions of book and documentary texts; to provide the basic methodological tools for the palaeographic analysis of medieval writings.
The achievement of these objectives allows the student to have the basis for learning the main medieval book and documentary writings; the tools for critical analysis and evaluation of artefacts; and the learning of the main critical tools for editions of texts.
The course aims to provide the main tools for the critical analysis of medieval library and documentary sources also with a view to a continuity of practices from the ancient world to the late Middle Ages, whether they are written, textual or material.
The course also intends to deepen, through practical exercises on classes of materials present in the area

Knowledge and understanding

- can critically use the main tools for the paleographic analysis of medieval artefacts;
- knows how to use the basic tools necessary for the cataloguing, critical and analytical study of the main medieval writings and artefacts in their material aspect.
- He knows the different types of sources useful for the historical reconstruction of the writing contexts that produced the medieval graphic typologies and is able to interpret them in a deep and effective way.
In the context of teaching, activities are planned to initiate the study of palaeography with the active and verifiable participation of students.

recognition of the main categories of writings and writing media; classification of media; classification of writing types.
in particular: forms and evolution of material writing supports (from papyrus to paper; from roll to code); forms and evolution of writing tools; conceptual categories for the study of writings. history of Latin writing from the origin to the 16th century (from capital letters to humanistic writings: epigraphic, Damasian and book capital; writings of graphic particularism: insular, Merovingian, Visigothic, Longobard and new corsive; lowercase carolina; documentary writings between the high Middle Ages and the 11th-12th centuries; Gothic; pre-humanistic and humanistic writings).

The test is oral. You can submit a short paper on published or unpublished material, but it's not part of the examination.
