This course is part of the “core educational activities” of the master degree program in “Governance of Public Organizations” and it is compulsory.
The course aims to present the statistical methods that are often applied to the analysis of social phenomena and public policies evaluation.
Knowledge and understanding: understand the most important statisical methods
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: analyze data for supporting decision making activities; apply predictive and interpretative models
The students are assumed to have a good knowledge of the basic principles of exploratory statistics and probability, as they are presented in any undergraduate level textbook of Statistics. As an example, a reference for these prerequisites are the chapters 1-4 of the textbook (Agresti or Agresti and Finlay) listed in the following.
1. Statistical inference: estimation and hypothesis testing problems
1. Test for groups comparison
2. Analyzing Association between Categorical Variables
3. Linear Regression and Correlation
4. Introduction to multivariate Relationships
5. Regressione multipla

Further materials will be in an area the Ca' Foscari e-learning platform.
The final assessment consists in a written exam, including multiple choice questions, and an oral exam . The exam aim at assessing the knowledge of the basic concepts and tools included in the programme and at assessing students’ ability of applying those concepts and tools to simple problems in the fields of economics and social sciences.
The exam rules could be modified due to the COVID-19 emergency.
The course is taught through presentation style lectures, integrated by the individual student activities. Students are supported by the indicated textbooks and by the resources made available on Moodle platform (slides, exercises, past exams).
