The course is part of the educational activities in the core program of the curriculum. It covers the compulsory-elective course for students of Turkish and Modern Greek, and is eligible as a linguistics course also for other languages.
1. Knowledge and comprehension
- Acquisition of notions of contact linguistics
- To understand processes of linguistic interference and interaction, structurally and sociolinguistically

2. Capacity of application
- To apply the acquired notions to the analysis of case studies concerning languages in contact of the area (and beyond)
- To compose autonomously a research on a case of language contact
Basic notions of general linguistics; if absent, the student is asked to acquire the necessary notions through personal reading (cf. references below) before the course or during the first weeks of the lessons. Basic knowledge of Turkish or Modern Greek can be beneficial, but are not vital to follow the course.
1. Introduction to the theories of language contact

2. Terms: bilingualism/bilinguality, code switching/mixing, diglossia

3. Areal case studies
Anatolia, Balkans, Cyprus, Turkish-Iranian contacts, Caucasus, Central Europe

The preparation and composition of the final paper (see below) is a complementary part of the course contents.

Independently from the attendance modality, evaluation is expressed by the following assessment scale:
18-22:
- sufficient knowledge and capacity to understand what has been requested according to the course program
- sufficient capacity of application of the acquired knowledge through critical analysis of case studies
- sufficient capacity of data collecting and interpretation and of autonomous research

23-26:
. average knowledge and capacity to understand what has been requested according to the course program
- average capacity of application of the acquired knowledge through critical analysis of case studies
- average capacity of data collecting and interpretation and of autonomous research

27-30:
- good or very good knowledge and capacity to understand what has been requested according to the course program
- good or very good capacity of application of the acquired knowledge through critical analysis of case studies
- good or very good capacity of data collecting and interpretation and of autonomous research

The grade of excellence ("lode") is assigned in cases of excellent achievements according to the criteria listed above.
Lecture - seminar and papers
The exam will consist of a written paper to be agreed with instructor on a specific topic of the course themes. The paper has to be discussed with the instructor.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "International cooperation" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
