VISIONS OF THE EASTERN WORLD IN ITALIAN LITERATURE

This course intends to arrange and analyse a number of texts of Italian Literature that talk about or refer to the Eastern World, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
The students should be able to navigate the odeporic, geographic and anthropological genres of Italian Literature, between XII and XVI century.
None. The knowledge of general paradigms of Italian Literature would be helpful.

- The world beyond Europe in chivalric poems (Boairdo; Ariosto; Tasso).
- An encyclopedia of travel literature: Ramusio.
Theoretical dissertations on single authors, cultural periods or contexts will be uploaded periodically on Moodle.
Oral exam, in which the texts will be analysed and discussed. The discussion will consist of reading, paraphrase and commentary of the texts treated in class. When possible, interdisciplinary digressions will take place.
