Course on Spanish language (LM0041) is a core educational activity for the Iberian Studies Curriculum of the Master's Degree Programme in European, American, and Postcolonial Language and Literature and consists of a half-year learning module and of annual coursework. The overall objective of this course is to introduce the students to the linguistic variation in Spanish and Latin American language and to achieve linguistic competence at the C2 level - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Learning outcomes are assessed through a structured test.

2.1.Knowledge and understanding
Linguistic variation.
The linguistic varieties in Spanish.
Discourse markers from a variational point of view
Communicative competence in Spanish and Latin American language at the C2 CEFR level.

2.2 Applying knowledge and understanding
Ability to describe the main varieties of the Spanish language, their relation with the current standard, and the relationship of the discourse markers with the variational phenomenon.
Ability to recognize the impact of linguistic variation in the creation and use of discursive markers.
Ability to identify the textual features of the special languages and their discursive genres.
Ability to retrieve the bibliographical sources suggested by the lecturer and to use electronic resources (COSER, AsinES, ALPI, CREA, CORPES XXI, CORDE, CORIS/CORDIS, Val.Es.Co...) for the knowledge and comprehension of the linguistic varieties of the Spanish language and the discourse markers of Spanish and Italian.
Ability to interact in communicative situations on a C2 CEFR level: Spanish/Italian translation and written and oral academic communication.

2.3. Making judgments
Ability to develop a variational and plurilectal competence in the Spanish language; to appreciate the value of the unity in diversity and the diversity in unity of the Spanish language, as well as the strategic function of the RAE-ASALE; ability to appreciate multilingualism, geographical, social, and textual varieties, as well as language contact situations in the Spanish speaking world.
Ability to self-assess one’s own language learning and acquisition process with particular attention to discourse competence and translation activity; ability to value translation choices from Spanish to Italian.

2.4. Communication skills
Ability to address the issues and problems presented during the course in a reasoned way; to discuss them and present their own ideas and proposals.
Ability to communicate (describe, explain, argue, translate, and interact) with the degree of correction and adequacy required at level C1+ / C2 of the CEFR.

2.5. Lifelong learning skills
Ability to develop original research; find bibliographical references and electronic resources; self-assess one’s own language learning and acquisition process; apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the course in a professional context.

A C1 CEFR level is suggested. The module deals with Spanish language varieties and their relationship to standard language. A wide knowledge of grammar and text analysis of Spanish language is assumed (knowledge acquired through the core educational activities of Spanish Language 1, 2 and 3 in the common curriculum of Languages, Civilisation and the Science of Language programme).

1. Introduction to the linguistic variation in Spanish. General notions.
2. Teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
3. Diachronical variation: historical varieties of the Spanish language.
4. Diatopic variation: main geographic varieties of the Spanish language (Europe/America)
5. Diastratic variation: social varieties of the Spanish language.
6. Diaphasic variation: register, textual typology, discursive genres, special languages.

Coursework:
Grammatical, phonetic-graphic, lexical, functional, textual, and discourse contents in Spanish at C2 level CEFR. Training to develop proficiency in accademic writing and translation from Spanish to Italian.

Language training
VV.AA, El Ventilador. Curso de español de nivel superior, Madrid, Difusión.
Students' learning is assessed via a two-part written exam in order to assess the acquisition of the contents of the theoretical module (part 1) and the language training (part 2). Both parts must be passed in order to get an overall pass in Lingua Spagnola – Lingua e traduzione (LM0041) course:

Part 1 (theoretical module) consists of a) an open question; b) a critical analysis of a piece of one of the required texts or commentary of an example of language use from a variational point of view; c) lexical entry of a Spanish discourse marker: definition, example, variational profile and translation into Italian. Duration: 90’
Part 2 (language training) consists of a) a grammatical test; b) writing; c) translation. Duration: 90’. Students who attended at least 70% of the training course can choose an alternative assessment consisting of four written, oral, and translation tests done during the course.

The final grade is calculated as follows:
Part 1: worth 60% of the final mark.
Part 2: worth 40% final mark.

Students holding a DELE certificate of C2 level are not required to take the part 2 (language training) on the conditions that i) the date on which the certificate was obtained is at the latest two years prior to the date of the exam ii) they provide the lecturer with a paper or electronic copy (both sides) of the certificate. No other certificates shall be accepted.

Lab activities of textual analysis.
Linguistic training: practical exercising of reading, writing, oral presentation, oral interaction, and translation at a C1+/C2 level.

Metalinguistic module lessons will take place during the second semester. Practical language training will take place during the whole academic year.
