LABORATORY OF DIAGNOSTICS APPLIED TO PICTORIAL WORKS

This course aims to provide tools and practical knowledge in the field of Diagnostics applied to the study of pictorial and polychrome works. During the Laboratory, students will have the opportunity to conduct a brief diagnostic campaign on real pictorial works (selected with Public or Private Foundations that deal with Conservation and Protection), through the use of advanced scientific instrumentation, in order to deepen their knowledge of the artefacts and understand their state of conservation.
Therefore, students will be able to acquire specific skills, important for the figure of the Scientist and Diagnosist for Cultural Heritage.

- Knowledge and understanding: to study real pictorial works and to understand the constituent materials and possible degradation processes/products through a multi-analytical scientific approach.
- Ability to apply knowledge: to be able to apply concepts learned also from other courses to understand the state of conservation of a pictorial work
- Ability to judge: to develop a critical and ethical approach to scientific and conservation intervention
- Communication skills: to be able to use specific language to explain information obtained analytically
- Learning skills: to be able to take notes during the lectures, deepening the concepts through individual study and with suggested articles or independently, to be able to consult the texts and bibliography assigned

Students must have basic knowledge of Applied Chemistry for Cultural Heritage and Analytical Chemistry
In addition, it is necessary to have taken and successfully passed the Safety course to gain access to the Laboratory.

- the outcome of the oral examination
- the work done during the workshop
- the written report due at least 7 working days before the examination date
