The course offers an overview, from a literay perspective, of the first decades of 19th century, at the beginning of which the modern subject emerging in the Enlightment comes to term with the highs and lows of self-determination and emancipation, from early Romanticism to the age of Restoration and beyond. From this point of view we will read Goethe’s Faust I (and some pages in particular), some works by Heinrich von Kleist (Michael Kohlhaas, La marchesa di O..., Il terremoto in Cile).
J.W. Goethe, Faust e Urfaust, a cura di V. Amoretti, Feltrinelli
