THIS COURSE IS FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS.
In line with the general objectives of the undergraduate program, this course is aimed at providing students with linguistic means and strategies which could enable them to interact in English both in private or public companies.
The course focuses on the language of Business, Economics, Trade and Finance. Language acquisition will be enhanced through the use of authentic materials in English, which will be used to develop students' reading, listening, speaking and grammar skills. The aim is to provide students with the tools and knowledge they need to understand the latest trends in the worlds of Economics and International Business. (Level requested to participate fully is C1 on the CEFR)

By the end of the course, students will have learnt how to:
- understand and use correctly specific language to describe economic and financial trends;
- speak about the latest developments in the digital economy;
- discuss relevant topics such as corporate culture, training, ethics, time management and change

The course is divided in modules, organised as follows:

Module 1 - Business structure, Corporate organisation and procedure, business strategy and leadership, job hunting.
Module 2 - Marketing and advertising - Brand, International advertising and marketing
Module 3 - Cross-cultural communication in the workplace

The final exam is a written test.

In the written exam, all candidates will be asked to answer open-ended and multiple-choice questions regarding the topics and notions that have been presented during the lessons. The same type of exam will be applied both to attending/non-attending students. It is strongly recommended that students attend the full course.

Tasks are divided as follows:
Listening comprehension
Reading comprehension
Multiple choice/Gap-fill questions
Writing

The pass mark is 18/30.

The final evaluation of the exam is based on the efficiency of the implemented methods, the completion and accuracy of the answers, and the clarity of the presentation of facts, thoughts and opinions. The final mark is expressed in thirtieths (with honours if deemed appropriate).
Each face-to-face lesson will deal with a specific topic while considering particular linguistic features typical of financial institutions. The theoretical explanations will be accompanied by exercises and analyses to consolidate the content through interactive lessons with audio-visual materials.
Class attendance is strongly suggested.

The course includes a series of language exercises that each student can access. There are 2 classes available and they are named ENGLISH FOR ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS-PRACTICE 1A and 1B.

Students in the A-L surname range are assigned to group 1A.
Students in the surname range M-Z are assigned to group 1B.
