The course is part of the Master in Science and Technology of Bio and Nanomaterials and runs in the first semester of the first year. The course aims at giving students the first rudiments on nanotechnology, describing the various facets of the theme: structural and functional properties derived from nanodimensions, integration of nanostructures into devices and their operating principles. Specific examples will be given about application of nanostructures in operating devices.

During the course, the students will learn the fundamental principles of nanotechnology science, from the point of view of both preparation of nanomaterials and integration of nanomaterials into devices, included the operating principles of a few model devices.
The student will be trained in identifying fields and applications, in which nanotechnology can offer improved functionalities, compared to conventional materials. They will also be instructed on the processes and phenomena, which make the nanomaterials successful in terms of performance of the final device.
Thanks to the knowledge and understanding of the content of the course, the students will be able to identify presently available technologies for preparation of nanostructured materials and their integration into devices.
Prerequisite to attend the course successfully is the basic knowledge of solid state physics, materials science and inorganic chemistry.
Mechanisms of nucleation and growth of thin films and nanostructures.
Liquid phase epitaxy. Vapor phase epitaxy. Vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) and vapor-solid (VS) condensation. Nucleation and growth methods: island model (Volmer-Weber), layer model (Frank-van de Merwe), layer-island model (Stranski-Krastanov).
Two examples of nanostructures: quantum dots and nanowires.
Physical and chemical-physical methods for the synthesis of nanomaterials: thermal evaporation, lase ablation, sputtering, chemical vapor deposition.

The students will undergo oral examination at the end of the course.
The students will undergo oral examination at the end of the course.

The course will include both classes and laboratory sessions. At least 80% of lab attendance is required to pass the course. In the lab, concepts closely related to the ones described in class will be experimentally tested.
