The course is part of the curriculum of the Bachelor's Degree in Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage and Activities, which aims to provide foundational knowledge for working in the field of cultural heritage as a specialist in the conservation and management of artistic heritage. The course offers a basic understanding of the history of dance, as well as insights into how different models of choreographic performance and the dancing body are presented and perceived.
Students will be able to place a choreographic work and a dance technique within the broader context of the performing and visual arts, as well as the cultural heritage they express. During the course, they will learn to view a dance performance critically, take notes both from lectures and reference texts to capture key concepts, and develop their analytical and synthesis skills. Finally, students will acquire the ability to use specialized vocabulary appropriately.
Reading knowledge of English is required in order to understand some of the texts included in the exam syllabus and the excerpts of performances presented during the lectures
The course provides a basic understanding of the history of dance through a selection of video recordings of performances, chosen to analyze performance forms, bodily practices and techniques, as well as the mechanisms that govern audience reception. The specific terminology necessary to understand the texts included in the syllabus will be introduced and discussed in class.

A selection of essays and videos is available on the Moodle platform (the password will be provided via email by Prof. Franco).

The exam consists of an oral test, namely a 20-minute interview starting with a presentation on a topic of the student’s choice, followed by a series of questions related to the course content. The evaluation criteria are based on: in-depth knowledge of the topics covered in class and/or studied through the required bibliography (60%); the ability to use specialized vocabulary (20%); and clarity and precision of oral presentation (20%).
