The course aims to provide students with a solid background in the principles of engineering applied to industrial biotechnological processes. The course focuses on the analysis of the different stages of the production process, with particular emphasis on mass balances, kinetic models and transport phenomena governing reactive systems. Topics will also include the preparation and sterilization of culture media and process streams, as well as the design and operation of bioreactors and the main product separation and purification techniques, with an approach oriented towards process performance evaluation and optimization at the industrial scale.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

Describe the principles of process engineering applied to biotechnological systems;
Apply mass balances for process analysis and modeling;
Use kinetic models for the quantitative description of reactive systems;
Analyse the operation of bioreactors, evaluating the influence of operating variables and transport phenomena (mixing, mass and heat transfer);
Describe and compare the main product separation and purification operations;
Interpret process data and assess process performance using monitoring and control tools;
Evaluate and optimize a biotechnological process in terms of efficiency and productivity.
Basic Knowledge about Microbiology.
Basic Knowledge about Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Basic Knowledge about Unit Operation in Chemical Processes.
The course will focus on the following topics:

Introduction to industrial biotechnological processes
Preparation and sterilization of culture media and process streams
Mass balances applied to bioprocesses
Process kinetics and modeling of reactive systems
Bioreactors: types, operation and operating variables
Transport phenomena in bioprocesses (mixing, mass and heat transfer)
Downstream processing: product separation, recovery and purification
Process monitoring and control
Process performance analysis and optimization

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

Scores in the range 18-21 range: limited and often superficial knowledge of the topics covered in the classes; unclear and lacking in technical terminology oral presentation .
Scores in the range 22-25: not always in-depth knowledge of the topics covered in the classes; orderly oral presentation but with not always correct use of technical terminology;
Scores in the range 26-27: good knowledge of the topics covered in the classes; fair ability to organize information and present it orally; familiarity with technical terminology;
Scores in the range 28-30: excellent mastery of the topics covered in the classes; ability to hierarchize information and correct use of appropriate technical terminology.
Honors will be awarded in the presence of excellent judgment and communication ability, and excellent understanding of the program's topics.
The teaching is carried out through lectures.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "Cities, infrastructure and social capital" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
