The course contributes to the learning objectives of the bachelor’s degree program, which provides a learning experience in both the business and quantitative context, by preparing students to be able to interpret and analyze financial statements using ratio analysis and cash-flow analysis.
This course aims to introduce students to the analysis of financial information presented in firms' financial reports. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Describe and apply the basic techniques of financial statement analysis;
- Explain the relationship between strategic business analysis, accounting analysis and financial statement analysis;
- Identify and utilize value-relevant information contained within financial statements;
- Recognize and explain the fundamental role of accounting numbers in the valuation of firms;
- Understand the impact of financial reporting choices on the usefulness of reported earnings to predict future performance;
- Prepare a written analysis of a listed company, on the basis of notions and techniques covered in the course.
Students cannot take the exam of FINANCIAL STATEMENT ANALYSIS if they have not passed and registered the exam ET0078 Principles of Management and International Accounting (Modules 1 and 2).
- Overview of financial statement analysis.
- Financial reporting and analysis; reporting environment; nature and purpose of financial accounting; main postulates and tools.
- Cash flow analysis.
- Return on invested capital and profitability analysis.
- Credit analysis.

Compulsory written exam. The exam consists of one open question and three exercises. Time: 90 minutes.

The following grading scale will be used, regardless of attending or non-attending mode:
A. Scores in the range of 18-22 will be assigned when:
- Adequate knowledge and applied understanding in reference to the curriculum are demonstrated.
- Limited ability to collect and/or interpret data and formulate independent judgments.
- Sufficient communication skills, especially regarding the use of specific language related to the economic functioning of public services.
B. Scores in the range of 23-26 will be assigned when:
- Good knowledge and applied understanding in reference to the curriculum are demonstrated.
- Fair ability to collect and/or interpret data and formulate independent judgments.
- Adequate communication skills, especially regarding the use of specific language related to the economic functioning of public services.
C. Scores in the range of 27-30 will be assigned when:
- Good or excellent knowledge and applied understanding in reference to the curriculum are demonstrated.
- Reasonable or excellent ability to collect and/or interpret data and formulate independent judgments.
- Fully appropriate communication skills, especially regarding the use of specific language related to the economic functioning of public services.
D. Honors will be granted when there is excellent knowledge and applied understanding in reference to the curriculum, exceptional judgment, and communication skills.
The pedagogical approach is based on a combination of lectures, exercises, discussion questions and case studies.
