HISPANIC-AMERICAN LANGUAGE 3

The course of Hispanic-American Language 3 belongs to the activities of the Bachelor's Degree in "Languages, Civilizations and Language Sciences." The course consists of a theoretical module
(II semester) and in language practices (full year). The main purpose of the course is to develop and strengthen the language skills in Hispanic-American Language (American Spanish) as described by level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In addition, the course aims to offer students a knowledge of theories and tools of translation from Spanish into Italian, in particular of Hispanic-American literary texts.

At the end of the course students will be able to:
- Know the Hispanic-American Language at the C1 level of the CEFR;
- Know and put into practice translation techniques;
- Develop judgment skills in relation with the course contents;
- Develop skills in individual processing, classroom interaction and independent comprehension of academic articles.

Possess a B2 level of Hispanic-American or Spanish language.

Module (II semester):
- Introduction to translation theory;
- Literary translation from Spanish into Italian;
- Translation practice of selected texts from Spanish into Italian.

Practices (full year):
Grammatical, phonetic-graphic, lexical, textual content and functional exponents of the Hispanic-American language (CEFR level C1).

The assessment will be through two written texts and an oral test.
The first written test (2h 30) aims to verify the achievement of the required language competence (C1) and consists of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, multiple-choice and gap-filling questions, an accents exercise, and a writing task.
Students who pass the first written test will be required to take the second written test (2h 30), which aims to verify the achievement of the module content and the development of a literary translation from Spanish into Italian. During this test, students will be allowed to use a printed monolingual Spanish dictionary and/or a bilingual Spanish-Italian dictionary.
The last test will be oral and aims to verify the achievement of the required language competence (C1). During this test, students will be given a short text about one of the topics covered during the language practices, that they will read in a few minutes. Afterwards, they will be asked to briefly present the content of the text and, starting from this presentation, a conversation will develop.
The final grade will be the average of the marks from the language competence tests (written and oral) and the written module test.

A student holding a DELE certification of the required level (C1) or higher, obtained no more than two years prior to the date of the exam, will be required to take only the oral module test. The student is required to give the teacher a copy of the certificate before the exam. The grade obtained in the DELE certification (expressed in hundredths) will be converted into thirtieths, regardless of the level of the certification.

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

The written exam grade of language competence is determined as follows:
- listening comprehension exercise: 2 T/F questions, 2 open-ended questions (up to 6 points)
- reading comprehension exercise: 5 multiple-choice questions (up to 5 points)
- multiple-choice grammar test: 7 multiple-choice questions (up to 3.5 points)
- gap-filling grammar test: 7 gap-filling sentences (up to 7 points)
- accents exercise (up to 3.5 points)
- written production (up to 5 points, taking into account the following aspects: grammar, vocabulary, coherence and cohesion, task completion, spelling and punctuation)

The oral exam grade of language competence is determined as follows:
- speech organisation: ability to express oneself orally in a clear and coherent manner (up to 6 points)
- interaction: ability to interact during the test (up to 6 points)
- grammatical accuracy: correct use of grammatical structures (up to 6 points)
- vocabulary: variety and appropriateness of vocabulary (up to 6 points)
- fluency and pronunciation: ability to express oneself fluently and with appropriate pronunciation (up to 6 points)

The written exam grade of module is determined as follows:
- linguistic and translation competence (up to 15 points)
- cultural and textual competence (up to 7 points)
- reasoned commentary in Italian about the translation test, demonstrating an understanding of the theoretical concepts covered in class (up to 8 points)

Honours will be awarded in the case of excellent results in all the tests and in all the considered aspects.
