The course is among the characterizing teachings of the course of study in Language, civilizations and language sciences, and aims to provide a general understanding of the work of Witold Gombrowicz.

Witold Gombrowicz, the outsider of Polish literature.
This module will explore the artistic development of Witold Gombrowicz, examining his primary genres and themes: the struggle with form, the praise of immaturity, the poetics of the grotesque, the dialectic between high and low culture, the critical representation of cultural stereotypes, the concept of identity, and the subversion of perspectives. Gombrowicz’s work will be analyzed against the backdrop of 20th-century history and culture, following his biographical journey from Poland to his emigration in Argentina and his eventual return to Europe.

The oral exam is designed to verify that students know the arguments developed during the course: a) knowledge of the lines of development of Polish literature in the period studied, with particular reference to the authors, movements and ideologies that have had the greatest impact on literary and cultural dynamics; b) knowledge of Gombrowicz's work and the ability to place it within the broader framework of twentieth-century Polish literature; c) the ability to comment on a text by applying the methodological tools provided during the lessons; d) the ability to translate a short text by Gombrowicz into Italian (Polish Literature); e) the ability to place authors and texts studied within the Polish literary tradition (Polish Literature), and twentieth-century Polish history (History of Polish Culture).

The lecturer has a duty to ensure that the rules regarding the authenticity and originality of exam tests and papers are respected. Therefore, if there is suspicion of irregular conduct, an additional assessment may be conducted, which could differ from the original exam description.

Regarding the grading scale, scores will be assigned according to the following schema:
A. Scores in the 18-22 range will be awarded in the presence of: Sufficient knowledge and applied
comprehension of the program;
B. Scores in the 23-26 range will be awarded in the presence of: Fair knowledge and applied
comprehension of the program;
C. Scores in the 27-30 range will be awarded in the presence of: Good or excellent knowledge and
applied comprehension of the program;
D. Honors will be awarded in the presence of excellent knowledge and applied comprehension of
the program.
