CHINESE LANGUAGE 3 MOD.1

The course aims to provide students with intermediate-level linguistic and translation-related tools and skills. The course seeks to develop students’ ability to apply their language skills in a variety of communicative situations, with particular attention to sociocultural contexts, as well as to read and interpret texts of both general and specifically cultural interest, of moderate complexity and characterised by a more formal register. The course thus aims to foster linguistic and translation-related skills that can serve as a fundamental tool for developing an in-depth understanding of contemporary Chinese society and culture.

Achievement of a level of linguistic competence equivalent to level B1 + of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Knowledge of Languages). Specifically:

1. Knowledge and understanding
• Demonstrate a solid knowledge of the grammatical system of modern Chinese;
• Possess a general-purpose vocabulary sufficient to approach texts in the original language and sustain a conversation (approximately 1,600 words and 1,120 Chinese characters), while also demonstrating familiarity with modes of expression and lexical choices that reflect a well-rounded knowledge of the relevant society and culture.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
• Be able to correctly translate into Chinese sentences containing relatively complex grammatical structures;
• Understand the general content of an essayistic or culturally oriented text in modern Chinese, so as to be able to answer specific questions about its content;
• Be able to navigate different communicative registers, incorporating into one’s own expression vocabulary and expressions acquired through the study of the texts included in the syllabus.

3. Judgement
• Be able to assess the level of one’s own linguistic knowledge, skills, and competences.

4. Communication skills
• Be able to communicate the specific features of linguistic and textual analysis using appropriate terminology.

5. Learning skills
• Be able to relate different contexts of study and apply one’s knowledge, skills, and abilities to support personal and professional development.

• Have an excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of the Italian language: be able to express oneself correctly both in written and oral form and master the tools of grammar and logical analysis;
• Having passed the Chinese Language 2 exam.

The course develops the ability to understand and translate simple Chinese texts on general and cultural topics. It also provides oral linguistic skills in Modern Chinese, and consolidates the ability to translate sentences, including relatively complex grammatical structures into Chinese. Specifically, it offers:

• reading, translation, and grammatical and translational commentary of short Chinese texts of general and cultural content, study of the main written chinese structures (shumianyu 书面语); training in consulting the paper dictionary: 30 hours of theory and practice;

• training in linguistic interaction in general and cultural communication contexts: 60 hours of exercises A (conversation)
• training in the translation into Chinese of sentences including even relatively complex grammatical structures: 60 hours of exercises B (translation);
• conversation tutoring for small groups: exercises C;
• translation tutoring for small groups: exercises D.

The verification of acquired abilities and skills is carried out through three tests:
- A translation, analysis, and comprehension test based on a short Chinese-language text on a general or cultural topic, with the use of paper dictionaries and/or Pleco in offline mode, lasting approximately one hour.
*The instructor is responsible for ensuring that the rules concerning the authenticity and originality of examination work are observed. Accordingly, in cases where there is reason to suspect irregular conduct, the examination may include a further assessment conducted as part of the examination itself, which may also take a different form from the one described above.

- Conversation in Chinese;
- Italian-Chinese translation of a few sentences (no dictionaries, 25 minutes).

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

The final grade is the result of the average of the grades of the three parts of the exam. Each part of the exam is passed with minimum of grade 18 and maximum 30, and the individual grids are given before the exam.

Teaching is organized in:
a) front lessons;
b) writing and conversation practice aimed at building and consolidating the knowledge, skills and competences necessary to meet the goal of the course;
c) tutoring aimed at discussing and clarifying specific language problems that emerged during the teaching.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "Human capital, health, education" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
