This course is the first Spanish Language and Translation module of the three-year programme. It aims to introduce students to Spanish linguistics and to the practice of translation to and from Spanish, as well as to enhance and consolidate linguistic competence at B1+ level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The course consists of 2 modules and an annual language training (“esercitazioni”) closely integrated with the modules. Spanish Language and Translation 1 mod. 1 is held in the first semester, Spanish Language and Translation 1 mod. 2 in the second one.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
Knowledge and understanding of phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical properties of Spanish, also considering its diatopic, diaphasic, and diastratic varieties as understood from a synchronic perspective (B1+ CEFR level).
Linguistic competence in Spanish at B1 CEFR level.

2. Applying knowledge and understanding:
Ability to describe the grammatical constructions and the grammatical phenomena studied in the course. Ability to to express in Spanish (B1+ of the CEFR). Ability to understand messages and interact with interlocutors in Spanish. Ability to use the the lexicographical tools and textual corpora presented and analysed in class to translate short sentences from and into Spanish.

3. Making judgments:
Ability to formulate and argue simple hypotheses in Spanish. Ability to identify adequate and inadequate translations (B1+ level).

4. Communication:
Ability to explain on a basic level contrastive differences between Spanish and Italian morphological, syntactic and lexical structures. Ability to use linguistic terminology in order to describe linguistic phenomena concerning Spanish. Ability to interact in Spanish language in communicative situations at a B1+ CEFR level. Ability to put into practice linguistic competence at a B1+ level in order to present issues raised during the metalinguistic module.

5. Learning skills:
Basic ability to self-assess acquisition of metalinguistic contents, as well as linguistic competence of Spanish. Ability to implement foreground knowledge to move forward onto the following modules and courses.

The assessment for the Spanish Language and Translation 1 course (12 ECTS/Credits) comprises the following three components:
1. A written examination for Spanish Language 1, Module 1 (duration: 45 minutes);
2. A written examination for Spanish Language 1, Module 2 (duration: 45 minutes);
3. An oral examination (approximate duration: 15 minutes).

The written examinations consist of multiple-choice and open-ended questions related to the content of the modules and the language practice sessions. They will be graded out of thirteen points (13 points for Module 1, 13 points for Module 2). To be eligible to take the oral examination, a minimum score of 8 points must be obtained in each of the two written examinations.
The oral examination, which is compulsory, assesses communicative competence in the Spanish language at level B1+. The oral test involves a conversational interaction and a presentational/expository task. The oral examination will be assigned a mark (from 0 to 4 points), which will be added to the average score of the written examinations. The sum of the scores from all three components will result in an overall final mark out of 30 points (a final grade out of 30).
Once a passing mark has been achieved by the student, the course convenor will proceed to calculate the final average and officially record the overall mark for Spanish Language and Translation 1 during the official examination sessions. The final recording of the 12 ECTS/credits for the Spanish language course will only take place after the entire process, consisting of all three parts, has been completed. As this is an annual course, passing one of the partial components does not entitle the student to have the corresponding credits for that component officially recorded (for example, 6 ECTS/credits for Module 1).

Grading is determined by:
- applied knowledge and understanding with reference to the syllabus (range 10 points);
- ability to analyse and interpret contrastive and syntactic phenomena, making autonomous judgements (range 10 points);
- communication skills, especially in relation to the use of specific language pertaining to the field of translation and at B1+ level (range 10 points).
