This 12-credit course offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the intersections between management practices, politics, and humanities. In the first module, the course will critically examine the philosophical underpinnings of management, including issues of power, surveillance capitalism, critical theory, and governmentality. In contrast, in the second module the course will delve into critical heritage studies with a focus on how participation, inclusion, diversity, feminism, post-colonialism, and queer approaches have an impact on how to manage and organise heritage places.
After completing the course, students will understand the main issues concerning the management of heritage preservation and valorisation, both in consolidated and in emerging organisations. Students will also acquire a complete and solid perspective on critical heritage studies, with a specific focus on their impact on how to manage the heritage.
There are no formal prerequisites. The course is designed for students from management and related disciplines. No prior background in cultural theory or philosophy is assumed. Students are expected to approach the material with an open mind, curiosity, and a willingness to engage with readings and participate in dialogue.
The main topics of the course will include:

1. Introduction to Critical Heritage Studies
2. Discourse and key concepts
3. Managing participation, inclusion, and diversity
4. Heritage places as sites of Memory and Trauma
5. Post-Colonial Perspectives in Heritage: managing processes of de-heritigization
6. Other approaches
Readings (chapters, papers and articles in international journals) will be uploaded on Moodle
Final written exam (100%) covering theoretical frameworks and applied analysis
• Students receiving a grade of 27 or below will have that grade automatically recorded.
