The course falls within the scope of documentary science, with particular attention to the events that have characterized archives between the end of the Western Roman Empire and the present day.
Students on the course will be expected to acquire specific knowledge related to the four crucial phases in the history of archives, from the establishment of the concentration archives to the birth of archival science (16th - early 19th centuries).
In addition to a good knowledge of Latin, students will be expected to understand the historical and institutional events following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the territories and state structures of the Italian peninsula, from the pre-unification period to the post-unification period.
First, we will outline some contributions from authors who have specifically studied the history of archives and the discipline. Then, several lectures will focus on the legal system of the Italian state. Finally, we will explore the issues surrounding archival description.
