The Course of Unit Operations provides knowledge related to the facilities and unitary operations of the chemical and biochemical industry used in the processes typically used in the control of the cycles of waste materials, including those in the state of the art. In particular, the typical aspects of the process chains related to the treatment of waste streams will be addressed, also in terms of sizing. The second part of the course is dedicated to the reactor part, where the operating logics of the ideal and real reactors and bioreactors applied in the remediation industry will be addressed.
The student will learn the elements for understanding the principles and applications of unit operations in the biochemical industry, the operation of reactors and bioreactors and the sizing of each of these elements, with particular reference to applications in the treatment of solid waste streams, liquid and gaseous.
A basic knowledge of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics is required.
First part: foundations and unit operations:

- Heat transport: heat generation (boilers and cogeneration systems), heat exchange (exchangers), cooling (evaporative towers)
- Phase separation: sedimentation, membrane systems
- Dehydration: filtration, centrifugation
- Concentration: distillation, concentration, drying
- Absorption

Second part: chemical and biochemical reactor technology

- Reaction velocities and kinetics in biological systems
- Kinetics and biomass growth
- Ideal reactors: batch, CTR, PFR, fed-batch
- Real reactor elements (RTD)
- Applications in biotechnology of bioreactors

Oral examination. The exam consists of 3 questions consisting of the theoretical explanation of a unitary operation covered in the course, or some numerical application examples.
oral
Scores in the range 18-21 range: limited and often superficial knowledge of the topics covered in the classes; unclear and lacking in technical terminology oral presentation .

Scores in the range 22-25: not always in-depth knowledge of the topics covered in the classes; orderly oral presentation but with not always correct use of technical terminology;

Scores in the range 26-27: good knowledge of the topics covered in the classes; fair ability to organize information and present it orally; familiarity with technical terminology;

Scores in the range 28-30: excellent mastery of the topics covered in the classes; ability to hierarchize information and correct use of appropriate technical terminology.

Honors will be awarded in the presence of excellent judgment and communication ability, and excellent understanding of the program's topics."
The teaching is done through oral lectures with slides.
