This is one of the characterizing courses for the Master's Degree "Languages and Civilizations of Mediterranean Asia and Africa" (Curriculum: South East Asia).
Knowledge and Comprehension:
- Complete Thai language theoretical skills at B2 level
- Complete Thai language practical skills at B2 level

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
- Read and write texts at B2 level
- Identify grammatical categories and their properties at B2 level
- Understand and interpret texts at B2 level in different contexts of actual situations in Thailand
- Engage in conversations at B2 level
- Deal with Thai common phrases/idioms used in everyday life

Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages defines language proficiency that allows the holder to interact independently and fluently with native speakers, understand complex texts, and produce clear and detailed texts on various topics.
Completion of THAI 3 [LT7090] course or equivalent.
Thai texts in different textual genres and diverse cultural contexts will be weekly given beforehand to the students to be discussed in class. The selected texts deal with, for example, history, newspapers, business, official letters, health, religions and beliefs, advertisement, poetry, festivals, society, folklore, manuals, excerpts from novels and short stories, cartoons, personal diaries, documentaries, environment, regulations, and among others.

Grammatical structures and lexical elements applied in the selected texts will be in-depth elaborated. The students will interact in class with the classmates or the teacher to deal with some situational sentences or paragraphs.

One takeaway homework (maximum one page) will be assigned for the students’ self-learning and discussed in the following week.
The teacher will provide the teaching materials in class and via the Moodle platform.
Written and oral exam.

The exam consists of a single test (written and oral), with the first session taking place during the Spring exam. The written exam will last one hour, followed immediately by the oral exams (both must be taken on the same day). The final grade will be determined by the average of the written and oral scores.

The exam is identical for both attending and non-attending students.

Grades will be assigned according to the following scale:

A. Scores in the 18-22 range will be awarded for: sufficient knowledge and applied understanding of the program;
B. Scores in the 23-26 range will be awarded for: fair knowledge and applied understanding of the program;
C. Scores in the 27-30 range will be awarded for good or excellent knowledge and applied understanding of the program;
D. Honors will be awarded for excellent knowledge and applied understanding of the program.
