Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
This is one of the characterising courses of the degree 'Languages, Civilisation and Language Sciences' where the student can acquire knowledge and understanding of the basic principles underpinning the field of Educational Linguistics and, more specifically, the field of foreign/second language teaching. The aim of the course is to develop knowledge of the basic principles underlying language acquisition/learning and the teaching of foreign/second languages, highlighting also the cultural aspects, and to develop the ability to understand their application. Additionally, the study will address the historical development of foreign language teaching methodology and pedagogy, as well as issues related to the assessment of language learning.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will acquire basic knowledge and understanding of: theoretical principles of language teaching, theories of language acquisition and language learning; historical development of language teaching; culture in the teaching of languages; curriculum e syllabus design; language learning assessment issues.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to make connections between theory and its implications for practice by consulting and evaluating teaching materials, elaborating exercises and tasks for specific learning needs of different groups of learners and analyse a situation for a language teaching proposal.
Making judgements:
The student will be able to interpret and evaluate the importance, for effective language learning, of various aspects dealt with on the course.
Communication skills:
The student will be able to communicate information, issues and solutions clearly and show mastery of the specific language of the field.

Further study materials will be indicated during the course and will be available on the Moodle platform.
IMPORTANT: Students who are unable to complete their preparation in class will be able to access the study materials on Moodle, which will be the same materials used by students attending the in‑class sessions.
Assessment methods
Final Grade:
The final grade is the sum of the points obtained in the written exam, plus 1 point awarded for the successful completion of at least 4 out of 5 online activities. These online activities are designed to promote discussions and reflections on issues related to language teaching and learning.
Type of exam
The lecturer has a duty to ensure that the rules regarding the authenticity and originality of exam tests and papers are respected. Therefore, if there is suspicion of irregular conduct, an additional assessment may be conducted, which could differ from the original exam description.
Grading scale
18-20: Basic knowledge of the main theoretical and operational aspects of educational linguistics.
21-23: Fair mastery of key concepts, with an analysis of teaching practices that demonstrates an understanding of the main theoretical and operational aspects of educational linguistics.
24-26: Good understanding of the topics covered, with clear and structured knowledge of the subject matter.
27-28: Solid understanding of the topics covered and the ability to develop well-supported judgments on the theories and techniques of educational linguistics.
29-30: Excellent knowledge of educational linguistics theories and techniques. Outstanding ability to connect theories and teaching practices.
30 with Honors: Original and brilliant work, with a significant personal contribution to theoretical reflection and teaching practice.
