Expected learning outcomes
- have a sound knowledge of the history of contemporary East Asia, and adopt a critical approach to address the most relevant historical and political developments in the region
- be able to discuss issues related to historical memory in East Asia and their influence on contemporary societies, politics, and cultural relations
- examine case studies using a mix of sources (monographs, articles, digital resources) and relevant literature
- adequately present and discuss some of the key features of relations between nation-states as well as regional and cross-cutting issues

Weeks 5-9: The role of Japan and China in global economic assets and their strategic visions of security and defense; territorial and maritime disputes.
Weeks 10-13: The evolution of US engagement in East Asia; Southeast Asia in the strategic competition between China and the United States; the EU and the Indo-Pacific; the role of supply chains in patterns of inter-state conflict and cooperation.

Assessment methods
Type of exam
The lecturer has a duty to ensure that the rules regarding the authenticity and originality of exam tests and papers are respected. Therefore, if there is suspicion of irregular conduct, an additional assessment may be conducted, which could differ from the original exam description.
Grading scale
The grades will be assigned as follows:
A. band 18-21: sufficient knowledge of the course topics and ability to analyse, evaluate, and synthesise concepts and issues related to the course; sufficient ability to examine and interpret historical events with critical ability and autonomy of judgment, and considering different perspectives and sources; sufficient ability to present the knowledge acquired effectively and to use specialised terminology appropriately;
B. band 22-25: decent knowledge of the course topics and ability to analyse, evaluate, and synthesise concepts and issues related to the course; decent ability to examine and interpret historical events with critical ability and autonomy of judgment, and considering different perspectives and sources; decent ability to present the knowledge acquired effectively and to use specialised terminology appropriately;
C. band 25-28: good knowledge of the course topics and ability to analyse, evaluate, and synthesise concepts and issues related to the course; good ability to examine and interpret historical events with critical ability and autonomy of judgment, and considering different perspectives and sources; good ability to present the knowledge acquired effectively and to use specialised terminology appropriately;

E. 30/30 cum laude: The grade 30 cum laude corresponds to 30/30 plus an exceptional demonstration of critical thinking skills.
