The Applied Microbiology course will allow the student to gain knowledge on the industrial biotechnological application of various microorganisms, from the food sector to the production of biofuels and secondary metabolites. In order to understand the applications of different microorganisms in different industrial sectors, the course will provide the basis of biochemical processes, cultivation plants, cultivation media and methodologies to optimize production yields.
Knowledge and understanding:

- Acquisition of the basis of biochemical processes and modulation of microbial metabolism
- Industrial production of biotechnological products with high added value
- Understanding the scalability of microbial processes on an industrial scale
To follow the course, a good knowledge of the basic concepts related to General Microbiology, as well as to Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry is required. A small review of general microbiology and biochemestry concepts (however not sufficient to fill significant previous gaps) is scheduled during the first two / three lessons.

The course does not adopt a specific textbook.
The slides are provided to students as teaching materials, produced based on scientific articles published in international journals.
The examination test shall be an oral examination.

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

Teaching is organized in lectures. In the University "moodle" platform, students will find teaching material (material screened in the classroom).
