The teaching is part of the related educational activities of the degree course in Antiquities: Archaeology, Literature and History, essential for students interested in Ancient Near Eastern and Eastern Mediterranean civilisations.
The course of Ancient Egyptian Culture on "Archaeology and History of Egypt and Sudan" is intended to focus on the historical-artistic and archaeological skills necessary to approach the archaeological documentation (materials and sources) of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Sudan (Nubia).
Thanks to this investigative work, the student will be able to verify the complexity of the socio-cultural relations between Egypt and Sudan (Nubia) in antiquity, making use of archaeological and textual sources.

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired a set of skills on the socio-cultural and historical-archaeological aspects of Pharaonic Egypt and Ancient Nubia, thanks also to a selected bibliography in support of individual research (short paper and ppt presentation), which will be discussed in class with colleagues and then with the professor in the examination.

These skills are part of the training of the archaeological profile, which is covered in the degree programme profile:
- Ability to critically analyse historical-archaeological themes related to Pharaonic Egypt and Nubian antiquities.
- Critical approach to the themes addressed in the course.
- Ability to analyse archaeological and textual documentation and materials.
A general knowledge of ancient Egyptian history is recommended. This can, however, also be acquired through individual readings provided by the lecturer at the beginning of the lectures and adapted to the student's academic experience.
Ancient Egyptian language skills will be helpful in understanding some of the sources discussed in class, which will also be available in translation.

For a complete Orientalist education, attendance of courses in History of the Ancient Near East, Archaeology of Syro-Mesopotamia, Archaeology of the Levant, Aegean Archaeology and Antiquities, Ancient Near Eastern Literature, Semitic Philology, Archaeology of Anatolia and the Caucasus, Archaeology of the Islamic World is recommended.
ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF EGYPT AND SUDAN
The course will address theoretical issues defining the disciplines ‘Egyptology’ and ‘Nubian Antiquities’/‘Archaeology of Sudan’ and practical issues related to Nubian archaeological sites, their relationship with Pharaonic Egypt and, above all, the precarious situation they are currently suffering from due to the armed conflict that has been going on for two years in Sudan.
This will be accompanied by an in-depth study of the Temple of Mut at the Jebel Barkal site, the subject of a long archaeological and restoration mission, whose architectural and structural aspects will be investigated, as well as the linguistic and cultural aspects conveyed by its iconographic and textual apparatus in hieroglyphic.
Furthermore, the ongoing Erasmus+ Project between Ca' Foscari and Khartoum University will also allow us to hear the voices and archaeological experiences of two Sudanese students in Venice.
A guided visit to an Egyptological and/or Nubian collection in Italy will be also planned.
Lecture notes; ppt presentations and materials made available on the Moodle platform.

Some references will be given in class from the books:
A. Manzo 2007, Introduzione alle antichità nubiane, Trieste.
E. M. Ciampini - F. Iannarilli (eds) 2021, Jebel Barkal. Half a century of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Sudan, Roma.

Throughout the course, students will participate in discussions of topics covered in lectures and will be involved in the analysis of archaeological documentation and materials through special workshops. The oral examination will include both questions on topics covered in the lectures and discussion of a paper/Ppowerpoint presentation, the topic of which will be chosen together based on personal research interests consistent with the course theme. Active class participation and expository skills will also be considered in the evaluation.
