The course is part of the Master's Degree in Economics and Management of Arts and Cultural Activities (EGArt). The course aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the history of modern and contemporary music. These topics are of fundamental importance for those wishing to deal with the management of cultural activities; therefore, adequate knowledge of them is part of the educational path of this master's degree course.

The course is part of two related modules (see History of music production EM3E28-1). Students obtain 12 credits when passing both partial exams.
The aim of the course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the history of music and musical culture from the late 19th century to the present day, with particular reference to instrumental music. Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired critical skills in analysing musical texts and will be able to contextualise them within the rich and multifaceted historical and cultural context of the period under consideration.

In particular, the basic objectives of the course are:

- the ability to situate the different models of music management and production in their historical context;
- acquire a basic methodology of scientific research on the subject;
- to develop a critical point of view with respect to the bibliography and the various analyses of case studies proposed during the lectures;
- the ability to interact with experts in the sector.
No entry requirements are requested.
The course will be divided into two parts. The first will offer an overview of the historical evolution of the repertoire and production systems of instrumental music from the late 19th century to the present day. The second part will focus on concert institutions and music festivals, with particular reference to the Venice Music Biennale. The most significant productions will be analysed, taking into account aspects relating to the management of relationships with composers, artists and audience. There will also be an in-depth look at the current situation and, thanks to a meetings with experts working in the key sectors of production and promotion , the course will follow the various stages of musical creation (from the genesis of the composition to the performance), including aspects of marketing and dissemination to the public.

A further specific bibliography will be indicated during the lessons.
Verification of the course preparation will be conducted by means of an oral examination. Three questions will be asked, relating to the contents of the textbooks and essays included in the programme.

The grading criteria will take into consideration the correctness and propriety in the use of theoretical lexicon (30%), the punctuality and extent of knowledge of the topics explored in depth in class and in any case learnt through the study of the exam bibliography (30%); the ability to critically elaborate the knowledge acquired to the case studies presented from time to time (30%), without forgetting a focus on the care of oral exposition (10%).

Grades in bands 18-22 will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach a sufficient level; grades in bands 23-26 will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach a fair level; grades in bands 27-30 will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach an excellent level; honours will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach an excellent level.
Frontal lessons integrated with readings, musical examples and guided listening. Expert contributions on specific course topics are planned.
During the first lesson the assessment methods and the structure of the course will be presented. Attendance is recommended.
