This course is one of the core educational activities of the Master's Degree in History of Arts and Conservation of Artistic Heritage. It aims to provide students with critical tools for a deep knowledge of Renaissance Venetian painting, with a focus on the narrative cycles for the Scuole (XVth-XVIth centuries), from Carpaccio to Tintoretto.
Knowledge and understanding : deep knwoledge of Venetian Renaissance narrative painting for the Scuole Grandi (XV-XVIth centuries), with a particular interest in social and historical context and religius debates.
Ability to employ knowledge and understanding : students will be able to master the main contents, concepts and terms of the course ; elaboration of personal and critical speech supporting by the tools provided by the teacher.
Capacity of judgment : students will be able to develop a critical approach on the different contents of the course and to provide a personal and informed opinion.
Communicative skills : students will be able to discuss specific subjects, respecting Italian syntax and enjoying the dialogue with teacher and other students.
Understanding skills : students’ understanding skills will be stimulate thanks to the seminar approach and inclusive discussions animated by teacher, academic scholars and other students.
A good knowledge of the art history (Early Modern period) is recommended.
This course focuses on Venetian Renaissance painting (XV-XVIth centuries), with a particular attention to narrative painting for the Scuole (Carpaccio, Tiziano, Paris Bordon, Tintoretto, etc.). Through a deep investigation of historical and social context, religious debate, relationship between painting and sources and between artists and patrons, we will discuss the complexe and fascinating topic of pictorial invention.

During the course, students will be required to present an in-depth paper on a topic chosen or agreed upon with the lecturer. This presentation must be the subject of a written paper at the time of the examination. The examination will also consist of an oral test, in which students must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the course content and bibliography, as well as direct knowledge of the works.

Grades in the range 18-22 correspond to a sufficient level; grades in the range 23-26 correspond to a fair level; grades in the range 27-30 correspond to an excellent level and honours are awarded for excellent performance. The depth of knowledge acquired through compulsory reading, the use of appropriate language and specific terminology, and in particular critical and analytical skills will be assessed.
The course includes lectures with image projections and visits (the course is part of the LUnAM project: L'Università al Museo, or University at the Museum), if the number of students allows it. In-depth seminars are also planned.
Attendance at the course is strongly recommended.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "Human capital, health, education" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
