The class is part of the group of disciplines of the course in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management (cv Archaeology), in Humanities and in History.
The primary goal is to equip students with a fundamental understanding of Pharaonic Egyptian language and literature, guiding them in the interpretation of one or more hieroglyphic texts.
The class aims to equip students with the critical and analytical skills required to read texts in hieroglyphic script, focusing on the classical language of Middle Egyptian.
Learning the Egyptian language and writing system will also be contextualised within an approach to so-called 'Egyptian literature' from the Pharaonic era.
Attendance at the Egyptology I course is required (see Other Information). It is suggested that the Egyptology class be integrated with the other disciplines of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.
Ancient Egyptian language and literature: problems of definition, transmission and genres.
Elements of the culture and language of Middle Egyptian writing, aimed at the reading of a text.
Particular attention will be paid to funerary production (Pyramid Texts, CoffinTexts, Book of the Dead), alternating with the reading of spells from stela or monuments and ancient tales.
