Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The course begins with the basics of law and then explores various environmental issues, considering both the environment as a natural asset and as human-made or modified assets.
The first part of the course will introduce general legal concepts, which will later be revisited in the context of environmental law:
The legal system and sources of law
Legal subjects
Goods and property
Compensation for damages
The second part of the course will build on these general themes, applying them specifically to environmental law:
Sources of environmental law
Parties involved in environmental legal matters: protection of private individuals and the state; legal actions available for their protection; the role of environmental associations
Regulation of environmental assets (landscape, water, cultural heritage, etc.), with a focus on rules promoting sustainability and solidarity
Regulations on land reclamation and territorial protection
Measures against illegal construction, with particular reference to restrictions on the negotiation of non-compliant properties
Environmental damage regulations, aimed not only at compensation but also, and above all, at prevention
Expected learning outcomes
Understanding the multilevel legal system that currently governs relationships between private individuals and between private individuals and public authorities in environmental law.
Knowing and comprehending the specific legal institutions covered in the course.
Understanding the legal framework that defines the existence of an environmental issue, as well as the regulations governing public and private actions in environmental matters, including sanctions and civil and criminal liabilities.
2. Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding
Ability to contextualize legally relevant human relationships—both personal and economic—within the appropriate legal framework.
Ability to identify the specific legal provisions or sets of provisions applicable to a given case, with particular reference to the environmental context.
3. Judgment Skills
Ability to interpret legal texts.
Ability to identify, distinguish, and relate principles and legal provisions from different sources within the multilevel legal system.
In situations of conflict or legal uncertainty, ability to determine which legal provisions or sets of rules can serve as parameters for judgment and tools for resolution or management.

To explore these topics in greater depth, students are also encouraged to study the following volumes, which provide a more comprehensive treatment of the subject matter:
a) Galgano, Manuale di Diritto Privato, 2022 (or later editions), limited to the following chapters: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3 (only paragraph 3.3 of Chapter 3), Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, and Chapter 19.
b) Pennasilico Mauro, Manuale di diritto civile dell'ambiente, 2014 (or later editions), Edizioni Scientifiche Italiane, limited to: Chapter 1 (entirely); Chapter 2 (entirely, except for paragraph 5); Chapter 3 (only paragraphs 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 9); Chapter 4 (only paragraphs 9, 11, 13, and 14); Chapter 5 (only paragraphs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, and 14).
Assessment methods
During the course, exercises will be conducted, including written assignments, to assess learning progress.

- Knowledge of the subject matter: Completeness and accuracy of the information provided; Understanding of fundamental concepts and their implications.
- Proficiency in legal language and terminology: Correct and appropriate use of legal terminology; Ability to express concepts clearly and effectively.
- Ability to connect different legal principles: Identification of relationships between various topics covered in the course; Application of knowledge to concrete or interdisciplinary contexts.
- The final grade will be determined based on a combination of these elements, assessing both the overall quality of the exam and the presence of significant errors or gaps.
