This overall course "HUMAN-CENTERED RESEARCH IN HUMAN-AI INTERACTION" introduces students to research methods for designing studies involving people, with a focus on survey studies and experimental design. It explores cases in Human-AI interaction, where AI-based tools complement - or challenge - human cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
Divided into three independent modules, the course covers experimental design, survey methods, and research approaches specific to Human-AI interaction.
This module provides both theoretical foundations and practical skills to confidently design and interpret surveys in HCI research.
After completing this module, students will be able to:
1. Design effective surveys and rating scales.
2. Utilize validated standardized scales focusing on usability and interactuon with AI-based systems.
3. Analyze basic survey data.
Students are expected to have a basic understanding of statistics.
The module Introduction to User Research covers the following topics:
• Types of surveys: close-ended and open-ended questions
• Standardized surveys in HCI
• Hands-on activity on designing and analyzing survey data
Students will be evaluated by writing a report on a topic of their choice related to their PhD project, applying the concepts and methods learned in the module. Active participation in class activities will also be required
written
The course will be assessed on a pass/fail basis
The course features lectures, group discussions of relevant literature, and practical activities to enable the learning outcomes to be achieved and demonstrated.
