This overall course "HUMAN-CENTERED RESEARCH IN HUMAN-AI INTERACTION" introduces students to research methods for designing studies involving people, with a focus on survey studies and experimental design. It explores cases in Human-AI interaction, where AI-based tools complement - or challenge - human cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
Divided into three independent modules, the course covers experimental design, survey methods, and research approaches specific to Human-AI interaction.
This module provides students with both conceptual and applied perspectives on designing and evaluating human-centered AI systems.
After completing this module, students will be able to:
• Engage with key frameworks and theories in Human-AI interaction
• Identify opportunities for improving AI-based system usability, accountability, and user satisfaction
Students are expected to have an interest in user studies and research methods in Human-Computer Interaction. Prior attendance in the other two modules is preferable but not required.
The module Introduction to User Research covers the following topics:
• Explainable, accountable, and intelligible systems
• Explainable AI and black-box explanations
• Guidelines for effective human-AI interaction
Students will be evaluated by writing a report on a topic of their choice related to their PhD project, applying the concepts and methods learned in the module. Active participation in class activities will also be required
written
The course will be assessed on a pass/fail basis
The course features lectures, group discussions of relevant literature, and practical activities to enable the learning outcomes to be achieved and demonstrated.
