The course is divided into two parts and aims to provide notions and skills on Armenian linguistics and philology.
The first part provides the basic elements for placing Armenian in the context of the history of Indo-European languages, deepening the evolution in a diachronic perspective the phonetic, phonological, morphological and syntactic evolution of Classical Armenian through the manuscript tradition.
In the second part the course proposes the teaching of the modern Armenian language through the methodology of theoretical linguistics, highlighting the grammatical, lexical and phonetic differences and similarities that are recorded between the Eastern and Western Armenian languages.
The course aims to provide students with the first methodological tools for a basic knowledge of Armenian linguistics and philology. At the end of the course the student will be able to
a) describe the main phonetic, phonological, morphological and syntactic changes that have affected the Armenian language throughout its history
b) demonstrate a general understanding of the grammatical structures of the Armenian language

- Syntax of Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian in a comparative key, word order, constituents, Focus, Topic and interrogative sentences, the structure of the temporal and aspectual system, consecutio temporum

The students will periodically take tests.
At the end of the second semester there will be a final exam, both oral and written. The written test consists of exercises with the aim of ascertaining the acquired grammatical and lexical skills. The written test can be replaced by passing two intermediate tests. During the written test the use of books, notes and electronic devices is not allowed. During the oral examination the student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics developed during the course.

28-30L: mastery of the topics covered in class and in the manuals;
26-27: good knowledge of the topics covered in class and, to a lesser extent, in the manuals; fair ability
in organizing information and presenting it orally;
24-25: not always in-depth knowledge of the topics covered in class and in the manuals; organized oral
presentation but with not always correct use of technical terminology;
22-23: often superficial knowledge of the topics covered in class and in the manuals; unclear oral
presentation and lacking in technical terminology;
18-21: knowledge of the topics covered in class and in the manuals is at times incomplete; confused oral
presentation, with little use of technical terminology.
