The course is among the characterizing teachings of the course of study in Language, civilizations and language sciences.
This course aims to provide a general understanding of Czesław Miłosz's work.

The module will analyze the work and biography of Czeslaw Milosz, Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1980, in its connections with Polish and European history and culture. The course will focus on themes and styles of the work of Czesław Miłosz, against the backdrop of the history of Polish culture in the twentieth century, from the twenty years between the two wars to the new century. The fundamental themes, poetics and works of Miłosz will be investigated, highlighting in particular some crucial themes, including the idea of ​​Europe and the relationship between intellectuals and totalitarianism, fundamental to understanding Polish literature and culture of the twentieth century.

The oral exam is designed to verify that students know the arguments developed during the course: a) knowledge of the lines of development of Polish literature in the period studied, with particular reference to the authors, movements and ideologies that have had the greatest impact on literary and cultural dynamics; b) knowledge of Miłosz's work and the ability to place it within the broader framework of twentieth-century Polish literature; c) the ability to comment on a text by applying the methodological tools provided during the lessons; d) the ability to translate a short text by Miłosz into Italian (Polish Literature); e) the ability to place authors and texts studied within the Polish literary tradition (Polish Literature), and twentieth-century Polish history (History of Polish Culture).

Regarding the grading scale, scores will be assigned according to the following schema:
A. Scores in the 18-22 range will be awarded in the presence of: Sufficient knowledge and applied
comprehension of the program;
B. Scores in the 23-26 range will be awarded in the presence of: Fair knowledge and applied
comprehension of the program;
C. Scores in the 27-30 range will be awarded in the presence of: Good or excellent knowledge and
applied comprehension of the program;
D. Honors will be awarded in the presence of excellent knowledge and applied comprehension of
the program.
