The course aims to provide an interpretative framework of the approaches to organizational design. Students will be able to understand the main issues related to organizational design at the enterprise level, learning to analyze, design, and evaluate the main existing organizational solutions.
Attendance and active participation in the course will enable students to achieve:
- Knowledge and understanding: to acquire the basic concepts of organizational design related to the division of labor and coordination; to understand the key variables and their impact on organizational design; to understand the organizational variables related to micro-structure and meso-structure (horizontal design, vertical design, coordination and control mechanisms); to understand the different organizational forms at both intra and inter organizational levels.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: to be able to compare different organizational solutions at the intra-organizational levels (micro, meso, macro) and at the inter-organizational level; to understand the impact of key variables on organizational design variables; to be able to compare different organizational forms and understand the contextual factors that enable their adoption.
- Judgment skills: to be able to critically analyze and assess the organizational design solutions adopted by a company; to be able to propose effective and efficient organizational design solutions.
The course in Business Administration is a prerequisite.
The course content will be structured as follows:
- Introduction to organizational design
- Organizational design and organizational theories
- Key variables in organizational design
- Analysis and design of the organizational meso-structure: horizontal specialization
- Analysis and design of the organizational meso-structure: vertical specialization
- Analysis and design of the organizational meso-structure: coordination and control mechanisms
- Organizational forms
Required textbook: Isotta, F., 2011, La progettazione organizzativa: problemi e soluzioni. CEDAM, Padova.

Details regarding any chapter/section to be excluded will be communicated during the course.
Learning assessment is carried out through a written exam. The exam lasts 1 hour and consists of 30 questions: 25 multiple-choice questions and 5 short answers questions (completion).

The graduation is on a scale of 30 points as follows:
Correct answer: 1 point;
No answer: 0 points;
Incorrect answer: -0.5 points.
The course makes use of the following teaching methods:
- Lectures
- Guest speakers
- Presentation and discussion of case studies that introduce or exemplify the topics covered in the course
- Short exercises, individual or group-based, allowing students to apply the concepts presented during the course to practical situations

The materials used in class will be made available on the university's e-learning platform moodle.unive.it after the lessons.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "Circular economy, innovation, work" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
