Anti-Industrial Protests in Italy: Environment, Labour, Community

This course focuses on the history of protest movements against hazardous and polluting industries. It will examine three types of protest that occurred alongside the establishment, development and decline of harmful industries: popular–rural, bourgeois–protectionist and working-class.
It will also reconstruct the reasons for, and forms taken by, the 'environmental issue' in the 1970s, as well as its subsequent transformations in relation to industrial restructuring and deindustrialization. Particular attention will be devoted to the role of workers and trade unions, tensions between labour and the environment, and issues of environmental justice.
Some of the lectures will be dedicated to long-term reconstructions of selected territorial contexts that have been particularly significant in the history of anti-industrial protest.
The reading list for the exam will be provided in due course.
In the meantime, students are advised to read Piero Bevilacqua, La terra è finita. Breve storia dell'ambiente (Laterza 2006).
The exam will consist of a written test to be taken in the classroom via the Moodle platform.
