Anglo-American Language 3 is one of the core courses of the undergraduate degree in Lingue, Civiltà e Scienze del linguaggio at Ca’ Foscari University. The course consists of this module (Prof. Riggs), and of language drills and exercises (lettrici) and aims to provide students with metalinguistic notions and knowledge equivalent to a C1+ level of the CEFR. The modulo part in particular also aims to develop students’ capacity to reflect on American English and culture through analyses of a selection of journalistic and academic texts.

1. Knowledge and ability to understand: further study of grammatical, lexical and pragmatic aspects of an advanced level in order to understand complex journalistic and academic texts. Awareness of the diversity of stylistic features, linguistic registers and structures with attention to the diversity of textual typologies.

2. Applied knowledge and ability to understand: to be able to use the theories studied and linguistic and cultural knowledge in order to understand complex texts, taking into account the various contexts of production. Ability to produce complex written texts of an academic nature and to discuss orally themes of language and culture studied via journalistic and academic texts.

3. Autonomy of judgement: To be able to interpret and produce complex texts in English and to produce oral presentations in a convincing and effective way.
