EPOS AND NOVEL IN ALBANIA FROM THE 15TH CENTURY TO THE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD
Sources, themes, motifs, and authors

The educational path dedicated to aspects and models of Albanian narrative begins with several moments in the Balkan epic tradition, and more specifically Albanian, with attention to the intersection between orality and writing. It will then focus on Albania's entry into the European imagination following the fall of Constantinople (1453) and the Ottoman expansion into the Balkans, also through the narrative of the resistance of Skanderbeg (a historical figure soon mythologized) and its contemporary and subsequent elaboration in the epic genre, as an element of the Albanian diaspora and the Arbëreshë settlements in Italy. Simple forms and stylistic features of epic song survive in subsequent literature and develop during the Romantic era. In the twentieth century, a revival of tradition emerged through rewriting, with elements drawn from popular genres and the historical novel, with allegorical, parodistic and metafictional nuances in Ismail Kadare (1936-2024) and Besnik Mustafaj (1958-), but also with references to the reception of the same themes by two Italian writers: Raffaele Nigro (1947-) and Carmine Abate (1954-), confirming the ongoing dialogue between the two shores of the Adriatic Sea.
Knowledge of the Albanian literary tradition from its origins to the twentieth century, with a focus on narrative forms, through readings and interpretations of the most significant texts from subsequent historical periods.
