"The CRUI Commission for Libraries recognizes the need for universities to adopt a specific program to help students learn the skills necessary to use available information sources in the most extensive, informed, and effective way possible. Academic and research libraries must equip themselves with information literacy programs and activate forms of extensive and systematic collaboration." (Translation of the author).

Science and Technology Library (BAS) responded to this need by offering this training course.

Provide information and skills that enable users to make independent and informed use of library resources and services.

By the end of the course, students will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:
1 knowledge of the BAS library, its resources, and services (on-site and online)
2 ability to independently access books, periodicals, databases, and electronic and digital documents made available by the library
3 expertise in applying effective research strategies and, therefore, in finding, evaluating, and using print and electronic information sources
4 awareness of the structure of a scientific article in STEM subjects
5 recognition of the existence of the new Open Science approach to the scientific process and to the concept of Open Access
6 understanding of the role of document citation from a formal (citation style), ethical, and legal (copyright and plagiarism) perspective
7 basic knowledge of bibliographic management software Zotero
There are no prerequisites.
The course will cover the following subjects:

0 LIBRARY SERVICES AND RESOURCES
The library and its role in support of study and research.

- The university library system and the services accessible via its website; the SBA and BAS library pages
- Collections and locations (how to find a book in the library)
- MOBI application: interlibrary loans, document delivery, consultations, purchase requests
- How to access electronic resources remotely

1 UNDERSTANDING AND USING RESEARCH TOOLS
How to retrieve information sources for bibliographic research? Research tools.

- cerCa’: portal of print and electronic resources available at Ca' Foscari
- Catalog of the Library of Venice Libraries: print collections of Venetian libraries
- General and specialized search engines
- Databases: disciplinary bibliographic and full-text databases subscribed to by the University
- AI Tools

2 CHOOSING THE RIGHT SOURCES OF INFORMATION. RESEARCH ARTICLE
How can you assess the relevance of the bibliographic information you have retrieved?

- The structure of a research article in STEM research areas
- Identifiers: PID
- Review times: research cycle and peer review
- Open science and Open access

3 PROCESSING INFORMATION
How to use the retrieved information?

- Copyright and plagiarism (copyright and copyleft)
- Citation: the essential elements of a citation; different citation styles
- Tools for organizing documents: citation software in theory
- Practical exercise with Zotero management system
Access to the following resources is available via the University's Moodle platform:

1 presentations displayed during classroom sessions
2 additional resources related to specific topics covered in class.
Asynchronous online test that will be available on the Moodle course page upon completion of the learning path.

There are no grades. To receive a passing evaluation, participants must correctly answer at least 7 out of 10 questions on the test.
Classroom-based lectures. Part of the last lecture will be dedicated to practical exercises using the Zotero management software.
