SPANISH LANGUAGE 3

The course Spanish Language 3 and Latin american 3 consists of a theoretical module in the second semester and a full year Spanish language course. The aim is to introduce the students to Spanish pragmatics and to bring them to a C1 communicative level (CEFR) in Spanish language.

This course is intended for students whose last name begins with a letter between A and G, regardless of their curriculum.

1. Knowledge and understanding
Basic notions of pragmatics
Grammatical, lexical, pragmatic and discursive contents at C1 communicative Level - Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

2.Applying knowledge and understanding
To analyze Spanish language speech from a pragmatic point of view; to translate from Spanish into Italian language taking into account all the pragmatic factors that determine the choice.

3. Making judgments
To make judgments of correctness, grammaticality and pragmatic adequacy based on linguistic reasoning; to draw conclusions from a contrastive Spanish/Italian point of view; to evaluate the correction and adequacy of translated text; to appreciate clear communication.

4. Communication skills
To understand and discuss the topics presented during the course with clarity and terminological precision; to justify translation choices; to present, argue, translate and interact with the degree of correction and adequacy expected at level communicative C1 (CEFR).

5. Learning skills
Ability to perform analysis and synthesis; self-assessment, bibliographical research and planning and drafting the final thesis research.

B2 level. Good knowledge of the Spanish grammar.

The assessment of learning outcomes consists of two components:
1. a written examination, aimed at assessing students’ acquisition of the content covered in the theoretical module;
2. an assessment of B2-level language and communicative competences, developed through the language practice classes.

1. Written Examination on the Theoretical Module
The written examination on the content covered in the theoretical module is held during the official examination sessions and consists of three open-ended questions on the topics addressed during the module and further explored in the assigned reference texts. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered and the ability to present them accurately and in a formal register in Spanish. The examination lasts 90 minutes.

The examination assesses:
• students’ metalinguistic competence in relation to the content covered in the module;
• accuracy in the use of specialised terminology;
• critical analytical skills;
• accuracy and appropriateness of expression in Spanish.
Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered, the ability to apply the knowledge acquired to the solution of syntactic problems, and the ability to present the relevant content accurately and in a communicatively appropriate manner in Spanish.

2. Assessment of B2-Level Language and Communicative Competences
The assessment of language and communicative competences covers five areas:
• grammatical competence;
• listening comprehension;
• reading comprehension;
• written expression;
• oral expression.

The assessment may be taken during the academic year or during the official examination sessions.

The assessment conducted during the academic year is divided into two sessions, held in January and May. It is intended for students who participate in the language practice classes and enables them to complete the assessment during the academic year, so that they can focus exclusively on the module examination during the official examination sessions. Students who do not participate in the assessment pathway during the academic year take the assessment during the official examination sessions, concurrently with the examination on the theoretical module. The language assessment lasts 90 minutes. Therefore, the total duration of the examination taken during an official examination session is 180 minutes (90 minutes for each examination).

The grade awarded for the module examination and the communicative profile resulting from the language assessment each account for 50% of the final grade.

Students holding a DELE certificate at B2 level or above, obtained no more than two years prior to the date of the examination, are exempt from the assessment of language and communicative competences and are required to take only the theoretical module examination. To claim the exemption, students must submit a double-sided copy of the certificate to the designated lecturer on the same day as the written examination. No certifications other than DELE are accepted. The grade obtained in the DELE certification, expressed as a percentage score out of 100, is automatically converted to a score out of 30.

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

Grading Criteria. The final grade will be determined based on the following criteria:
• Knowledge and applied understanding of the course content (maximum 10 points);
• Ability to gather and interpret information, demonstrating independent judgment (maximum 10 points);
• Communication skills, with particular attention to grammatical accuracy, clarity and fluency of expression, and appropriate use of technical language related to pragmatics (maximum 10 points).
Honors (cum laude) may be awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding performance across all criteria: exceptional knowledge and applied understanding, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Mentoring programs

Metalinguistic module lessons will take place during the second semester. Practical language training will take place during the whole academic year.
Students who are unable to complete their classroom preparation by attending lectures are invited to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the academic year and at the beginning of the second semester.
