The module ‘Translation and Specialist Languages (Politics, Economics, Science) – Spanish’ is taught in the first year of the Master’s degree programme in Specialist, Multimedia and Accessibility Translation – Specialist and Media Accessibility Translation curriculum, and forms part of a strongly vocational training programme in the field of specialist translation. The course aims to develop students’ advanced skills in the analysis and translation of specialist texts in Spanish, with particular reference to the political, economic and scientific sectors – fields in which translation requires a solid command of linguistic structures, discursive conventions and specific sectoral terminology
The teaching has a marked practical and applied focus, whilst maintaining a constant reference to the main contemporary theories of translation studies. With this in mind, teaching activities will alternate between periods of theoretical reflection and guided translation exercises, aimed at developing in students a greater awareness of the decision-making processes that characterise the translation process.
The Spanish Language and Translation course aims to progressively introduce students to the theory, methodology and practice of specialized translation between Spanish and Italian, with particular emphasis on linguistic aspects in a translatological key. The concept of translation will be presented as an act of interlinguistic and intercultural mediation. In this regard, the basic notions of the theory of modern translation will be provided and subsequently all the strategies that the translator has at his disposal to conduct the process of interlingual transposition will be illustrated. The expected learning outcomes are as follows:

- To Know the main aspects of Spanish political, economic and scientific phraseology from a translation perspective

- To recognize the linguistic difficulties in the translation act

Students must possess a C1 linguistic-communicative competence in Spanish according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages.
Translation and Terminology (creation of glossaries).
Phraseology and translation
Textual analysis (style, function, register, etc.)
Translation techniques and strategies. The translation process as an act of interlinguistic and intercultural mediation.
Analysis of translation errors. Type of errors (linguistic interferences).
Documentation phase (reference material, use of dictionaries and other sources).
Professional and deontological aspects of the translator work.
Writing a linguistic and translatological comment

The course will be structured around the following thematic modules, designed to gradually introduce students to the translation of key specialist texts between Spanish and Italian:

Module 1 – Theory and methodology of specialised Spanish-Italian translation
Introduction to the main theoretical models of specialised translation, with particular attention to source text analysis methodologies, translation strategies and contrastive issues between Spanish and Italian.

Module 2 – Introduction to Spanish-Italian translation of political language
Analysis of the linguistic and discursive characteristics of political and institutional language, and guided translation of texts from this field (institutional speeches, political statements, political analysis articles, official documents).

Module 3 – Introduction to Spanish-Italian translation of economic and commercial language
Study of the main characteristics of economic and commercial language and translation of specialist texts such as economic articles, market reports, corporate communications and economic and financial documents.

Module 4 – Introduction to Spanish-Italian translation of scientific and technical language
Introduction to the linguistic and terminological peculiarities of scientific and technical language, with translation exercises involving popular and specialist texts in the scientific field, with particular attention to precision

The examination consists of a written paper, lasting a total of three hours, designed to assess both translation skills and the ability to engage in theoretical reflection developed during the course.

The paper is divided into two parts.

The first part involves the translation from and/or into Spanish of various text types belonging to the specialist fields covered during the course (political, economic-commercial and scientific). The translations must be accompanied by a translation commentary, in which the student is required to explain the main translation choices made and discuss the strategies employed. This part of the exam contributes to the final mark up to a maximum of 20 marks.

The second part consists of drafting and presenting, in Spanish, a theoretical response addressing the main aspects of the theory and methodology of specialised Spanish-Italian translation covered during the course. This section of the exam contributes to the final mark up to a maximum of 10 marks.

The exam is considered passed with a minimum mark of 18/30.

The lecturer has a duty to ensure that the rules regarding the authenticity and originality of exam tests and papers are respected. Therefore, if there is suspicion of irregular conduct, an additional assessment may be conducted, which could differ from the original exam description.

The final mark will follow the following pattern:

Lectures will be held entirely in Spanish language and will have the form of seminars, with the help of a power point in order to deal with the theory and methodology of specialized translation. Participation and involvement of students will be encouraged through practical tests and translation projects aimed at simulating the professional practice of specialized translation.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "Human capital, health, education" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
