Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The general objectives of the course are: to achieve a language competence equal to C1+/C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for students from LLEAP/SL and B2 for students from RIC; to further develop metalinguistic competence about the Portuguese and Brazilian language.
Expected learning outcomes
To deepen the knowledge of phonetic, lexical, grammatical, pragmatic, and textual aspects for the comprehension and mediation (at first sight and not) of complex texts produced in Portuguese in its different national varieties.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
To know how to apply language skills to adequately recognize, understand, comment on, and mediate complex texts of different types and registers; to know how to interact in Portuguese and produce appropriate written and oral texts.
3. Autonomy of judgment
To be able to issue correction and grammatical judgments based on linguistic reflections; to be able to find bibliographic sources for in-depth study autonomously; to be able to use the online resources available for the study of the Portuguese and Brazilian languages; to be able to implement communication strategies.
4. Communicative skills
To be able to interact in Portuguese and Brazilian language in communicative situations provided by the respective level of the CEFR; to be able to implement language skills to present the main issues addressed in the module; to know how to interpret, comment on, and translate complex texts in Portuguese and Brazilian language.
5. Learning skills
Ability to self-evaluate on an advanced level with respect to their competence in Portuguese and Brazilian language and with respect to the acquisition of metalinguistic content; ability to undertake self-learning, seeking and selecting tools for further research, also in view of the production of academic texts.

Contents
The module introduces methodologically and addresses the linguistic mediation and translation in the pair of Italian/Portuguese languages, theorizing and exemplifying issues related to the different textual types and terminological problems, in progressive degrees of binding. From a linguistic point of view, contrastive work will be carried out in particular at the lexical, grammatical and discursive levels.
The first part of the module will be delivered by prof. Gregório Firmino and will focus on the situation of Portuguese in Mozambique. The second part will be delivered by prof. Vanessa Castagna.

Assessment methods
LLEAP/SL
The written test, designed to assess the attainment of linguistic proficiency (CEFR levels C1+/C2), consists of two parts, the average of which yields a score out of 30:
1) Translation from Portuguese into Italian of a text of approximately 1,500 characters, similar to those covered during the course (30 points; duration: 90 minutes);
2) Translation from Italian into Portuguese of a text of approximately 1,500 characters, similar to those covered during the course (30 points; duration: 90 minutes).
The oral exam consists of an interview in Portuguese (approximately 20 minutes) on topics covered during the course, based on a 5- to 10-page paper on a topic agreed upon with the lecturer. The oral exam is graded on a scale of 0 to 30 and is averaged with the score obtained on the written exam, thus determining the overall exam grade.
Note: The written exam is a prerequisite for the oral exam, which must be taken in a single sitting and within the same exam session in which the written exam was passed.
RIC
The written exam consists of a grammar test designed to assess whether the candidate has achieved CEFR Level B2. It includes fill-in-the-blank exercises and the conversion of direct speech to indirect speech (30 points; duration: 60 minutes).
The oral exam consists of an interview in Portuguese (approximately 20 minutes) on topics covered during the course, based on a 5- to 10-page paper on a topic agreed upon with the lecturer. The oral exam is graded on a scale of 30, and this score is averaged with the score obtained on the written exam, thus determining the overall exam grade.
Note: The written exam is a prerequisite for the oral exam, which must be taken in a single sitting and within the same exam session in which the written exam was passed.
Type of exam
The lecturer has a duty to ensure that the rules regarding the authenticity and originality of exam tests and papers are respected. Therefore, if there is suspicion of irregular conduct, an additional assessment may be conducted, which could differ from the original exam description.
Grading scale
The written examination is graded as follows:
- Each translation: accuracy of interpretation of the text (up to 10 points); ability to produce a grammatically correct translation (up to 10 points); coherence, cohesion and effectiveness of discourse strategies (up to 10 points).
The oral examination is graded as follows:
- Knowledge of the topics presented and discussed in the paper (up to 10 points);
- Ability to critically analyse the topics and independence of judgement (up to 5 points);
- Clarity of presentation and appropriate use of language (up to 15 points).
The marks for the written test and the oral test are averaged. If the average is 30/30, honours may be awarded for excellent performance in all areas considered.
RIC
The written examination is graded as follows:
- Test: up to 30 points awarded in proportion to the number of correct answers in the series of grammar exercises (each correct answer is worth 30/number of answers expected).
The oral examination is graded based on:
- Knowledge of the topics presented and discussed in the paper (up to 10 points);
- Ability to critically analyse the topics and independence of judgement (up to 5 points);
- Clarity of presentation and appropriate use of language (up to 15 points).
The written and oral exam grades are averaged. If the average is 30/30, honours may be awarded for excellent performance in all areas considered.
