The course is part of the Master's Degree in Economics and Management of Arts and Cultural Activities (EGArt). The course aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the history of modern and contemporary music. These topics are of fundamental importance for those wishing to deal with the management of cultural activities; therefore, adequate knowledge of them is part of the educational path of this master's degree course.

The course is part of two related modules (see History of music production EM3E28-1). Students obtain 12 credits when passing both partial exams.
The aim of the course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the history of music and musical culture from the late 19th century to the present day, with particular reference to instrumental music. Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired critical skills in analysing musical texts and will be able to contextualise them within the rich and multifaceted historical and cultural context of the period under consideration.

In particular, the basic objectives of the course are:

- the ability to situate the different models of music management and production in their historical context;
- acquire a basic methodology of scientific research on the subject;
- to develop a critical point of view with respect to the bibliography and the various analyses of case studies proposed during the lectures;
- the ability to interact with experts in the sector.
No entry requirements are requested.
The module is divided into two parts. The first part provides an overview of the historical development of the instrumental music repertoire and its production systems from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Particular attention will be devoted to the main organisational models, concert institutions, musical networks, and the transformations of performance and production practices.
The second part focuses on concert institutions and music festivals, with particular reference to the Venice Music Biennale. Through the analysis of a selection of significant productions, students will explore the decision-making and organisational processes involved in the planning and delivery of musical events, with particular attention to the relationships among institutions, composers, performers, artistic directors, cultural managers, and funding bodies.
A substantial part of the module will also be devoted to the direct observation of contemporary production practices. Thanks to collaborations with the Venice Music Biennale and other musical institutions in the region, the course will include site visits and meetings with industry professionals and artists involved in current productions. Through these activities, students will examine the different stages of musical creation and production, from the commissioning and genesis of a new work to its performance, promotion, and dissemination. The module will provide insight into the production and management of musical events, cultural marketing, mediation activities, and audience development, offering a practical understanding of how major concert institutions and music festivals operate today.
