The module addresses the need to examine in greater depth aspects of literary history relevant to the period under consideration, with particular attention to the eighteenth century.
Students attending the course will have the opportunity to engage with theatrical texts and works on theatre theory dating from the same period as Carlo Goldoni’s development as a playwright, while also focusing on authors and works that are not widely known outside specialized circles.
A fundamental experience of the literary language in its evolution from its origins to modernity.

Eighteenth-century theatre underwent various developments compared to the previous century, with significant revisions to the essential statutes observed until then. This process primarily involved the so-called "comic theatre," which progressively moved from the Commedia dell'Arte to a dramatic form intended to imbue itself with educational values and also promote its literary value. An examination of Carlo Goldoni's dramaturgy, as is well known, captures one of the most evident and paradigmatic paths of this process. Goldoni's works will therefore be examined not only in relation to the genre of comedy, in which he sought to establish himself and gain his primary fame, but also in relation to the formal spaces in which the playwright took his first steps: libretto writing for opera, and serious and playful intermezzi. The overall theatrical landscape in which Goldoni found himself intervening will also be explored, with examples drawn from other contemporary authors, some of whom were close to Goldoni's own experience.
The most recent critical editions of the works of Carlo Goldoni and Carlo Gozzi, as published in their respective national editions, will be taken into consideration; other dramatic works will be provided during class via the Moodle platform.
