The 'Beginners', 'Intermediate' and ‘Advanced Greek' classes are intended for those students who do not have previous knowledge of Ancient Greek or wish to refresh it, starting from the grammar traditionally taught at high school level. The classes are for those who wish to attain a level of proficiency suitable for the study of ancient and Medieval Greek literature, philosophy, archaeology, ancient history, palaeography and epigraphy.
There are three different levels taught during the year (Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced): second period (Beginners), third period (Intermediate), fourth period (Advanced). Students can enrol in the level appropriate to their knowledge of Greek.
***Students are expected to attend regularly and to complete assigned home-works before each class, there is no programme for non-attending students.***
The expected learning outcomes of this course are:
- consolidation of previously acquired knowledge of Greek grammar;
- acquisition of skills in the analysis and translation of short texts of intermediate to advanced complexity;
- understanding of intermediate–advanced structures of the Greek language and the ability to translate them appropriately into Italian;
- in-depth knowledge of the Greek verb system: future and aorist passive, perfect tense, and basic notions of the pluperfect;
- knowledge of all the basic rules of sentence syntax, with particular attention to subordinate clauses and the use of the participle;
- knowledge of a substantial portion of the basic vocabulary and of the related topics of Greek culture.
Knowledge of previously covered topics in Greek grammar (refer to the Intermediate Level syllabus).
- Completion of the verbal system (future and aorist passive; perfect; basic notions of the pluperfect);
- Syntax of subordinate clauses and the use of moods;
- Translation of texts of increasing difficulty (including passages from ancient authors).
The required coursebook is:

M. Pintacuda - M. Venuto, Dromos. Corso di lingua e cultura greca. Mondadori Education 2022. (3 vols.).

Students will also find useful to own the Greek-Italian dictionaries by F. Montanari (Loescher) or L. Rocci (Dante Alighieri Editrice) or to consult the paper or online version of the Greek-English dictionary by Liddell-Scott-Jones (http://stephanus.tlg.uci.edu/lsj/#eid=1&context=lsj ).
At the end of the course of the third and final module of 'Esercitazioni di greco per principianti' there will be a final written exam. It will consist in

1) A number of questions verging on phonology and morphology topics targeted during the course, and on the 'decipherment' of Greek verb forms: during this part of the examination grammars, dictionaries and other sources will not be allowed.

2) The translation of a short text; dictionaries will be allowed but not grammars or other books.

The exam will take place over 3 hours. The highest score for both parts is 30/30. The exam will be passed with a score of at least 18/30 in each part.
During the last week of the course a mock exam text will be uploaded on Moodle.

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

The assessment will be based on checking the level of knowledge of the grammatical rules covered in the course, understanding of the proposed texts and the ability to competently translate Greek into a meaningful Italian rendering. More specifically:
- the test is considered sufficient (18-22/30) if the student is able to answer at least half of the questions correctly and produce translations that, albeit with some errors, make complete sense and demonstrate sufficient reflection on the rules of Greek.
- the test is considered good (22-26/30) if the student is able to answer more than half of the questions correctly and produce translations which, with only a few minor errors, make sense and show adequate reflection on the rules of Greek.
- the test is considered excellent (27-30/30) if the student is able to answer almost all the grammar questions correctly and produce translations that are correct in grammatical aspects and accurate in their rendering into Italian.
- the test is considered excellent (30/30 cum laude) if the student not only answers all the grammar questions correctly and produces translations that are correct in grammatical aspects but also has a particularly elegant rendering in Italian.
The teaching is organized in traditional classes, which consist in short presentations by the lecturer concerning new topics of Greek grammar, followed by individual or group exercises through which the students will learn how to translate and consolidate their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary. Homework will be assigned.
