Pre-requirements
- A strong command of one's mother tongue (usually Italian).
- An independent approach to study and a strong cultural background will favor the acquisition of the knowledge taught in this course.
Contents
1. Theoretical module 1 with Professor Mirella Agorni (first semester);
2. Theoretical module 2 with Professor Linda Rossato (second semester);
3. Language practice labs ("esercitazioni") with the CEL (Dr. Barbara Pagotto) to develop their integrated language skills at a B2 level of the CEFR.
Title of Theoretical Module 2: "From phrases to texts": This theoretical module will provide the metalinguistic tools necessary to describe the structure and use of English phrases, clauses, and sentences, as well as their function within the text. More specifically, students will study grammatical, syntactic and discoursive structures by observing their use in English texts produced in everyday, academic, and semi-specialized contexts, alongside a contrastive analysis with Italian. The course will also examine basic theoretical notions of discourse analysis. Examples of translated texts will be provided and students will also practice translating and revising short, non-specialized texts.
As for the "esercitazioni" classes, students will focus on the use of the grammatical, syntactical, communicative and textual features of the English language that have been studied during the module

The written exam for Module 2, which lasts 30 minutes, assesses whether students have acquired the metalinguistic concepts necessary to describe the internal structure and function of phrases, clauses, and sentences, whether they can identify them within short examples, and whether they can recognize the primary communicative function and register of texts. The exam includes multiple-choice questions, a cloze-test (gap-fill exercise), and the translation and/or revision of a short translated text from Italian into English.
The joint oral exam for Module 1 and Module 2 consists of a brief interview on the topics covered during the language tutorials (esercitazioni) with Dr. Pagotto, using appropriate terminology in correct and fluent English.
