GERMAN LITERATURE 1

The course is part of the related and complementary educational activities of the Language Cultures and Linguisticss course.The course aims to introduce German literature and culture through texts on language and the problematisation of its nature in the late 19th and early 20th century.

- Development of the ability to apply knowledge , understanding and skills in solving questions related to new or unfamiliar topics, embedded in broader (or interdisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study;

- Communicate conclusions, knowledge and the rationale behind them clearly and unambiguously to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors;
- Learning skills:
Development of skills that enable one to continue to study mostly self-directed or autonomously

Giving Form to Thought: The Culture of German Romanticism

An awareness of the value and significance of literature is no longer a given in the critical study of literary texts, either within the university setting or in the broader context of contemporary cultural life. It is therefore necessary, when laying the foundations for a course in literature, to begin by examining attempts to define what literature is and what it represents for the culture of a country, a continent or even the world. Such a definition can be arrived at in many ways, and one of these is to trace the attempts at description and the reflections that have marked the various periods of the cultural history of German-speaking countries. Whilst retaining its introductory nature, the course will examine some of the key narrative texts of German Romanticism – a pivotal era in the development of modern German culture that has passed on myths, symbols, values and concepts of decisive importance right up to the 20th century.

The assessment of learning will take place by means of a final ORAL examination. the following will be specifically assessed: knowledge of the examination texts, critical ability, expression. Exam duration: approx. 30 minutes

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

between 18 and 24 if the student shows sufficient knowledge of the course content
between 25 and 28 if the student shows good knowledge of the topics and an ability to critically analyse them
between 29 and 30 if the student shows very good knowledge of the topics, confidence in exposition and very good capacity for critical analysis.

The general framing of the problematic will be in historical and historical-poetological form. The necessary philosophical basics will be introduced. The reading of texts will follow the principles of close reading and hermeneutic criticism. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction between students and lecturer through summaries and critical protocols of the lectures as well as through the seminar form of the lectures.
