This interdisciplinary course will bring together philosophical, legal, sociological and anthropological perspectives to discuss the framework of intersectionality and its impact on our understanding of inequalities, discriminations as well as resistance and empowerment.
After having discussed the theoretical and epistemological grounding of intersectionality, this course will open to its methodological and substantial applications in the social sciences and policy making. In these same field, we will also look at the limits of intersectionality and possible further developments.
Prerequisites: some knowledge in gender and legal studies (see module 1 and 2)
This interdisciplinary course will bring together philosophical, legal, sociological and anthropological perspectives to discuss the framework of intersectionality and its impact on our understanding of inequalities, discriminations as well as resistance and empowerment. Originating in the Black women’s movements, the framework of intersectionality has incredibly expanded to be considered today as a fundamental when looking at n the experience of women, LGBTQ+, migrants, racialized people and minorities. Contemporary sociological and anthropological research is increasingly taking such perspective in the study of people’s life, in a variety of situations. Legal studies have come to terms with the necessity of a intersectional approach to vulnerabilities, inequalities, rights and discriminations. After having discussed the theoretical and epistemological grounding of intersectionality, this course will open to its methodological and substantial applications in the social sciences and policy making. In these same field, we will also look at the limits of intersectionality and possible further developments.
